A Loss Felt Across a Community

In December, the Olathe South community was shaken to its core by the passing of Ryan Whitney. Ryan was more than just a student—he was a vibrant presence, known for his unforgettable smile, kind heart, and remarkable athletic talent. Friends, teachers, teammates, coaches and neighbors all felt the weight of his loss. While Ryan’s life was filled with love, friendship, and support, he fought a battle with depression that ultimately took him from those who cherished him most. His passing left a void that was deeply felt not only in Olathe South community but far beyond.

A Mother’s Determination in the Midst of Grief

As Tiffany Whitney prepared to honor her son’s life, she sought a way to channel her grief into something meaningful. She knew Ryan would want to help others—especially young people navigating their own mental health struggles. While planning his funeral, Tiffany decided that instead of flowers, contributions should be directed toward an organization that promotes youth mental wellness. When she learned about Fight Club, she knew instantly that it embodied the very values Ryan stood for: camaraderie, resilience, and support.

The Birth of the Olathe South Boys Fight Club

Tiffany’s vision was not only about honoring Ryan’s memory—it was about protecting and lifting up those he loved. She helped establish the Olathe South Boys Class of 2028 Fight Club, a group that brought together Ryan’s younger brother and his friends. These boys had lost not only a friend but, in many ways, a brother. Tiffany knew they would need each other to weather the pain of grief. Their Fight Club meetings became a safe place where they could talk openly, lean on one another, and connect.

A special acknowledgment goes to Brad Mann, president of Livin’ the Dream Basketball (LTD), who stepped forward without hesitation. Upon hearing of Ryan’s passing, Brad reached out to the boys he knew were close to Ryan—many of whom had played in his program—and offered the use of his space for their Fight Club gatherings. His generosity created a safe, welcoming environment for the boys to meet, connect, and heal together. The Olathe South community is deeply grateful for his kindness and support.

A Message Left Behind

This past Sunday—almost eight months to the day after Ryan’s passing—Tiffany shared something extraordinary with the boys during their meeting. She read a message Ryan had left behind for his friends, in which he expressed sorrow for his decision and acknowledged the pain it would cause. He asked for their forgiveness and, most importantly, urged them not to suffer in silence. His words carried a plea that they would always reach out for help when needed, ensuring no one else would bear their burdens alone.

A Legacy of Love, Faith, and Hope

Tiffany has taken Ryan’s words to heart, making it her mission to extend their reach far beyond the circle of his closest friends. She is working tirelessly to make sure youth across the entire Kansas City metro area know where to turn for help. Through Fight Club, Ryan’s spirit lives on—not only in the smiles and laughter of his friends but in every young person who finds the courage to ask for help. Tiffany holds firmly to the belief that Ryan’s story does not end here but will continue as God brings good out of even the deepest heartbreak.

And you can also be a part of Ryan’s story. On September 1st, what would have been Ryan’s 16th birthday, the community will gather for the Ryan Whitney Memorial Wiffleball Tournament at the Home Field Baseball Complex in Kansas City, Kansas. The tournament begins at 8 a.m., and while team registration is now closed, everyone is welcome to come cheer the teams on, enjoy delicious food, and learn about the many local resources available to support teen mental wellness. This day will be a celebration of Ryan’s life—exactly the kind of joyful gathering he would have wanted his friends to share in his honor.
